Dr. Alicia J. Barber, PhD, is dedicated to bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and public understanding. With a rigorous academic background, Dr. Barber graduated Cum Laude from Union College with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, followed by a Master of Philosophy in Translational Biomedical Research from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in Neuroscience from Dartmouth College. Her dissertation research focused on sex differences in Alzheimer’s pathogenesis to advance precision medicine applications in dementia care.

Driven by a passion for scientific communication, Dr. Barber has translated her extensive research experience into a dynamic career in science media. As the founder of Brain Health Media, she leads the creation of engaging and accessible content that demystifies complex scientific topics for a broad audience. Her work has been widely recognized, including her contributions to Being Patient, an Alzheimer’s-focused media platform, where she published articles on topics ranging from dementia research to patient and caregiver experiences. Dr. Barber’s expertise has also made her a sought-after commentator, frequently appearing on broadcast television programs like the UK’s TalkTV, and quoted by medical news outlets like HealthCentral, to interpret Alzheimer’s research.

In addition to her role at Brain Health Media, Dr. Barber is deeply involved in advocacy work, using her platform to promote policy reform and raise public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. She has engaged with policymakers, including the New Hampshire governor and state representatives, to emphasize the importance of research funding and treatment access. Her advocacy efforts during the pandemic, including a published Op-Ed in the New York Daily News and public speaking engagements, have highlighted the critical need for changes in nursing home visitation policies to protect vulnerable populations.

Dr. Barber developed and taught a multi-lesson course for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Dartmouth, an adult continuing education center. The course provided a comprehensive introduction to Alzheimer’s disease, covering symptom management, legal and financial matters, brain health best practices, and emerging therapeutic approaches. Dr. Barber is dedicated to making complex scientific information accessible and actionable for diverse audiences.

Dr. Barber’s commitment to science communication and dementia advocacy is fueled by her personal connection to the disease, honoring the memory of her grandmother, Lauren Barber, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2017. Her work at Brain Health Media continues to impact thousands, as she remains dedicated to advancing public understanding and support for brain health. In recognition of her significant contributions, Dr. Barber was recently honored with the Pembroke College Emerging Alumni Leader Award at the University of Cambridge.
